Frank Ape on the Street

Frank Ape on The Street by Madison Daniels

Walking around the streets of New York at times can feel a bit lonely, especially over the past several months as we have all had to socially distance and work from home, but one smiling face that is always present to brighten the days of passers-by is Frank Ape, the mystical creature created by Brandon Sines, a New York-based artist. Unbuilt Labs is happy to be collaborating with Brandon on a collection of special edition Frank Ape T-shirts to spread the word about sustainability and the importance of the climate to all communities. Frank Ape is present throughout New York, but he holds a special place for me among the many characters of New York because he is a part of my neighborhood, as well as several others throughout the city.

Every day as I turn the corner, I am greeted by this smiling Yeti-like friend. Many people have probably experienced a similar feeling of positivity when viewing Brandon’s iconic character, Frank. As part of a recent artist collaboration, called Project 49, Brandon Sines contributed a mural of Frank to the entrance of a warehouse that is a collaborative artist space in Bushwick. The goal was to take a dreary, boring warehouse and cover it in art and creativity.  In another art space down the street in the Brooklyn Beer Garden, Frank is rocking out with the neighborhood. The presence of Frank Ape in these bright community spaces highlights their central message of imagination, creativity, and play to “create your own universe” through thoughtful action rings true.

In a neighborhood covered almost head to toe in art, Frank Ape stands out with their positive attitude and welcoming presence. Frank Ape is a part of New York and a part of the streets that I call home. These bright and exuberant works of art are the perfect place to visit with friends while exploring the city and community.
